CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

VOSS

MY FATHER WAS a secretive bastard, and if he were still alive, I would tear his throat out and make him watch as I fed his muscle piece by piece to the crows. I would use his appendages as treats for my scytheseers as I called them forth to carry out royal missives to procure the other old texts. I needed to learn more about what in the hellfires was going on.

I huffed as I tossed another dusty volume onto the rickety stack Penn and I had formed between us. We had been at this for hours, and I had been chatting back and forth with Max whenever the passages grew boring.

The texts my father had curated over the years in his library pertained not to the royal line, but instead to the Lords and Ladies of other courts. While these volumes would come in handy eventually, what concerned me was my magic. For a typical Fae, and before I took over the royal crown, magic would replenish steadily. It never felt finite or like something that could run dry. Now, my magic threatened to cave my body in on itself.

The irony of the situation was not lost on me. My siblings and I had all craved this power growing up, wanting to take it from my late father. Now, it held my magic in a vice grip, exactly like a curse.

“I may burn this library to the ground,” I grumbled, staring at the endless array of books. All of them were useless thus far. A little fire never hurt anything.

“There’s no need to be so dramatic, Voss. It will take time, but we’ll find it.”

I gestured to the vacuous space. The sun had rapidly shifted toward the horizon, and it was only a matter of time before Elspeth demanded that I deal with the royal court’s requests. Part of me wished I could have my murderous little fox kill these Fae. Their complaints and constant grievances—over something so petty as feeding the humans—made my skin crawl. I’d rather scoop out their hearts and crush them as I had done to Emille’s than sit for another minute in a room listening to their squabbles.

Still, the library held no answers, and the longer I spent here, the more angry I became. Max served as a distraction from my growing frustration, but I wanted her here. I wanted to take my emotions out on the sweetest part of her. I wanted to hold her under my grasp and suck her clit until she screamed my name. The desire to feel her coming apart underneath me caused my cock to twitch.

There were so many things I would do to her once I had time.

I’d teach her a valuable lesson about her traitorous idea of killing me. While I hoped she would try, it was only because I wanted her to fight me. Since the moment she plunged her sparrowbone dagger into my chest at our first encounter, I yearned for another battle. One she would never win.
